This report is going to be on the game Ice hockey. A game of hockey is divided into three twenty minute time periods that are called periods. Between each period there is a fifth teen minute intermission. In hockey there are several ways a game may end if there is a tie at the end of regulation. The pros use one twenty sudden death period in which the first to score is the winner. In the amateurs they use a shoot out in which five players from each team are selected and allowed to go one on one with the opposing goalie and which ever team scores the most goals after all five members for both teams have taken their shot they are the winners. If there is a tie after this it keeps repeating until a winner is crowned.…show more content…
A defensemen’s shift will often be slightly longer then that of a winger or a center.
There are three different types of penalties in hockey a minor, a major, and a non contact penalties. Non contact penalties occur when a player hit’s the puck from his zone past the red goal line in the other teams zone and a member from his team does not touch it, however the goalie for the opposing team can wave it off and keep the puck in play, this is called icing. Another non contact penalty is when a teammate passes the puck to another teammate and it goes over a blue and red line without being touched before crossing both lines this called a two line pass. The last of the non contact penalties is off sides and this when an opposing team is going into their defenders zone and they pass the blue line before the puck does (the puck has to be the first thing to pass the blue line going into the zone). A minor penalty is assessed when an excessive amount of body or equipment is used to impede the speed or shot of an opponent. The player must then sit in the penalty box for two minutes of play and his team must play a man down (power play). If the opposing team scores during this time the man then can leave the box. A major penalty is given when most often for fighting or a severely violent act, and results in five minutes in the penalty box and return to play. This can also result in a game misconduct in which the player may not return to the game, but
History Of Hockey Essay
No cross checking, no cradling, no handling, no body checking or deliberate pushing from behind, and no high sticks or pick ends. What I have just described are some of the common rules of ice hockey. Though the rules of ice hockey are well defined and their origins can be traced back with certainty, this is more than can be said about the sport itself. So where did hockey originate? Though this question seems simple enough, hockey as we know it has left open many questions that one may never be able to answer with certainty. This is because the origins of this sport are questionable, being that there are many individuals who have a different understanding as to the origins of this sport. Questions pertaining to the origins of ice hockey have been around for as long as the sports existence and there are many suggestions for its origins, but without the proper documentation there is no saying which of these claims should be taken as truth. While doing research on the origins of ice hockey, I have come up with several variations as to where ice hockey originated. Looking at each of these claims there is one that I feel has the most supporting evidence to support its claims. As such, it is this claim that I will discuss in this paper as well as any structural conditions at that time that may have caused ice hockey to originate. I will also be evaluating the reliability and validity of each of the sources used that provides supporting facts to this claim. The main question that I will be asking throughout this paper is not a matter of where it originated, but more so about why and how it originated. By focusing on these questions, it is my goal to try and establish whether or not this claim is accurate in stating that it is in fact the founder of this sport.
The explanation that I found most convincing has the origins of ice hockey placed in Windsor Nova Scotia during the 1800's. In 1788, Kings College which was Canada's first college was established in Windsor. (Hockey in Canada 2004) Field hurly was a common game at this time, which was being played by the boys at Kings College. It originated in Ireland as a field game, where people would play the game year round using balls and sticks.(Internet
Hockey Scout 2001) In the winter, the boys at Kings College found this game difficult to play in the fields so the boys played the game on their favorite skating pond.(Internet Hockey Scout 2001) As the decades went by and this game grew in popularity, it would later develop into a new winter sport known as ice hockey. Canada, at the time of the development of ice hockey, was as well going through many developmental stages of its own. When looking at the origins of ice hockey, one can compare the developmental stages of this sport with the structural changes that took place in Canada at this time. By doing this one can study the structural changes taking place to understand the reasons why this sport originated....
